About Us

We were left puzzled and saddened when we first learned that there are many empty and abandoned Japanese machiya scattered around Kyoto. These traditional Japanese machiya do not only represent local history and culture but they were also once loved by families which carry important memories from generations.

Kyoto is a quaint city, but this ancient city is now facing a tremendous challenge. The number of Japanese machiya are steadily declining as most are being demolished for new developments. Kyoto Machiya Collection™ was thus created with a simple vision – to salvage these culturally significant Japanese architectures and imbue them with a fresh life. This way, they are ecologically sustainable for more decades to come, and it will also allow many others the opportunity to appreciate and experience these truly unique traditional Japanese architectures.
